National Alliance on Mental Illness

  • The month of September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, but we should always be vigilant if we are worried about ourselves or someone else.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death among you people, and it does not discriminate based on gender, age, race, or background.  Many people affected by suicide or suicidal thoughts feel shame or stigma, leaving them feeling alone to deal with things.

If you are worried about someone:
Ask, "are you thinking about suicide?"
Keep them safe by separating them from anything harmful.
    Be there for them.
Help them connect to professional help.
    Follow up with them.

If you or someone you know needs help, call the Suicide Prevention Hotline at 800-273-TALK (8255) or 911 immediately.
