Sheri L Trepanier-McFarlane is a native of Sault Ste. Marie and a 1983 graduate of Sault Area High School. Sheri has always had an interest in working with students with special needs. Sheri logged many hours as a volunteer for the 4-H Handicapped Horseback riding program, American Red Cross and helping in Special Education classrooms prior to her graduation from Sault High School. While pursuing her degree at Northern Michigan University for Special Education, Sheri worked on various Special Olympic committees, including chairing the Winter Special Education Olympics at Northern Michigan University and establishing volunteer programs within the Marquette Public Schools.
Sheri has had a vast amount of experience working with special education students and students with special needs during her professional career. Sheri began teaching in Marquette in the Spring of 1990. During her three years with Marquette Public Schools, she taught various special education programs including Cognitive Impairments, Learning Disabled and Early Childhood Developmental Delays. She also taught reading to At Risk learners through the Title I Reading program.
Sheri moved back to her native area of Sault Ste. Marie in 1994, where she continued her career teaching Special Education, focusing on elementary Resource Rooms. She also had a unique experience co-teaching a fully inclusive 4th grade classroom at Lincoln Elementary School.
Sheri earned a position as Principal of Bruce Township Elementary School in 2001, where she remained principal for 4 years. During her 4 years at Bruce Township Elementary School, the school was awarded the Governors' Golden Apple Award for improvement in MEAP scores earning the school $50,000 for two consecutive years.
The fall of 2004 brought Sheri a new challenge, Principal of Soo Township Elementary School (the elementary school she attended as a grade school student). This school doubled the number of students and staff in her charge. This challenge proved to be very successful for the staff, students, and parents at Soo Township School.
While principal at Bruce Township School, Sheri was assigned the additional assignment of Supervisor of Special Education during the the summer of 2002. Sheri maintained both positions as an Elementary Principal and Supervisor of Special Education until June of 2005 when Sheri left the reins of principal to focus on the position of Director of Special Education. The 2011-2012 added yet another opportunity for growth as her duties will also include that of Assistant Principal of the Sault Area Middle School.
The fall of 2012 brought Sheri back to the dual position of elementary principal at Lincoln Elementary School and directory of special education. This was an exciting move as being an elementary principal has always been Sheri’s favorite part of her career opportunites.
Sheri holds her teaching certifications in the areas of Elementary Education (K-5), with an additional endorsement in Cognitive Impairments. She holds Master's Degrees in the areas of Learning Disabilities and all levels of School Administration as well as an Educational Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership. Sheri is currently enrolled in the Doctoral program at Eastern Michigan University, where she has completed all required course work and is working on her dissertation with a planned graduation date of December 2016
