    Student Leadership Activities

     Enrollment in a Career Center class is the gateway to participate in the various

    student leadership activities available.

    on the following leadership activities.

     

    Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA)  Future Health Professionals - Available to students in Health Science Class.  This organization is active in providing assistance to the American Red Cross and U.P. Blood Services by helping with four blood drives throughout the school year.  In addtion to this, HOSA volunteers at senior facilites during the holidays, and sponsors families in need at Thanksgiving time.

    The group engages actively in fund raising activities including selling candles, first aid kits, and sponsoring a breakfast.  The funds are used for both charities and competition costs.  HOSA students compete at the regional, state, and national levels.  Students who do not desire to compete, may travel to HOSA conferences at the state and national levels in order to attend leadership and informational workshops relevant to their career goals.

     

    Business Professionals of America (BPA) - Available to students in BMMT Classes. BPA is a state recognized youth organization for business students.  All business department students are eligible to join BPA.  The group is involved in school and community activities.  There is a regional competition held in January in Escanaba, MI where the students compete against other business students in the Upper Peninsula.  There are over 50 contest from which to choose.  Students that place in the top 4 of their respective contest are eligbile to attend the State Leadership Conference held at the Amway Grand Plaza in Grand Rapids, MI in March.  In Addition, students can also compete at the National Level at various locations across the country.

     

    SKILLS USA - Available for Machine tool, Welding, Law, Construction, Drafting and Automotive students.  This organization allows students to compete with other Skills USA groups in various catagories such as carpentry, electrical, and masonry.  Students compete in regional competitions in the hope of qualifying for SKILLS USA State competition held in Grand Rapids, MI.  The students stay at the Amway Grand Hotel and the competition is held at the DeVos Center.  Students fund raise to help cover the cost of these competitions.   

     

    First Robotics - Available to all High School and Career Center Students.  This team provides students the opportunity to work on designing and building a robot that is used in competitions at the regional and national levels.  The robot is built to perform functions that the national orgaization requires which vary each year.  Student involvement includes project design, computer programming, manufacturing processes, application of mathematics and science skills, diving and web page design.  The students generally specialize their involvement based on intereste and abilities.  College scholarships are also available.  

     

    Michigan Industrial Technology and Education Society (MITES) - Available to students in Drafting and Design Technology, Welding Technology, Machine Tool Technology and Woodworking.  This organization has regional and state competition for class projects that students choose to enter at the regional level.  Winning projects at the regional level advance to state competition.  Student scholarships ar also available.
