Multi-Purpose Room Renovation
Week of July 6th – July 10th
- Bay Area Demolition began removing block walls, doors/frames, tile, and plaster ceilings from the locker rooms.
- Bay Area Demolition continued removing pool tile.
- Bell Masonry installed formwork and rebar for the pool footings.
- Berger & King continued mechanical/plumbing demolition on the second floor.
- Shoreline Power Services continued electrical demolition. Removed circuits from panel in corridor 106 and mechanical room 307.
- Otwell Mawby visited the site to conduct further asbestos investigation.

Week of July 13th – July 17th
- Bay Area Demolition continued locker room demolition and removing pool tile.
- Bay Area Demolition began removing block walls on the second floor.
- Bell Masonry poured the concrete pool footings and installed steel angle on pool walls. Also stripped footing forms.
- Bell Masonry staged masonry in preparation to lay pool infill walls. Began laying block in the pool.
- Berger & King installed hangers in corridor 106
- Berger & King removed piping from locker room walls that were demoed.
- Shoreline Power Services continued electrical and fire alarm demolition. Tracing/Removing circuits.

Week of July 20th – July 24th
- Bay Area Demolition installed temporary shoring under the first floor
- Bay Area Demolition continued locker room demo.
- Berger & King staged duct deliveries in the basement, continued mechanical demo on the second floor, and cored holes through existing walls for water lines.
- Berger & King installed duct in the basement, removed existing water lines, and installed waterline to mechanical room 308.
- Shoreline Power Services continued fire alarm and electrical demo.

- SB completed measurements for temporary fencing and planned locations for site construction laydown

- Berger & King began demoing the existing mechanical ductwork in the basement
- Berger & King began shutting off water valves and draining the plumbing piping
- Spence Brothers site trailer was delivered
- Shoreline Electric tied the site trailer into temporary power
- Shoreline Electric investigated parking lot lighting wiring that was struck during the soil boring
- SSMAPS Construction kickoff meeting was held on Thursday, 6/11.

Week of June 15th – June 19th
- Berger & King began removing toilets, sinks, and urinals from the locker rooms
- Berger & King continued demoing existing mechanical ductwork in the basement and began removing plumbing piping
- Shoreline installed temporary lighting in the basement
- SSMAPS removed bleachers from the pool area, benches from the locker rooms, and other miscellaneous school belongings
- Temporary construction fencing was installed
- Spence Brothers reworked temporary fencing east & west of the tennis courts

Sault Schools Construction & Community Update
Sault Schools continues to make strong progress on several construction and facility projects that directly support student learning and strengthen our broader community. These efforts reflect the vision shared during our bond campaign and our ongoing commitment to creating high-quality, future-ready spaces.
Elementary Updates
School Roof
Work on the Elementary School roof is actively underway and progressing on schedule. This important upgrade will improve the long-term durability of the building, enhance energy efficiency, and ensure a safe, comfortable learning environment for our students.
Classrooms for grades 2–5 will receive a fresh update over the next month, including new paint and flooring to create bright, welcoming learning spaces.
Sault Secondary Transformation
We are proud to share that construction bids totaling $9.6 million have been officially awarded. The next phase of demolition and construction is scheduled to begin on June 9, moving this project from preparation into active status followed by rebuilding and renovation.
This investment represents a major milestone in creating modern, engaging spaces that better serve both students and staff.
Playground Improvements
Site work has begun for the new playground at Soo Township. Early construction efforts are focused on site preparation, setting the stage for a safe, inclusive, and engaging outdoor space that supports both play and learning.
The Sault Elementary playground will follow in late June.
Washington and Lincoln: Community-Focused Repurposing
The Washington and Lincoln buildings are being thoughtfully repurposed for the betterment of our community—fulfilling a key promise made during the bond campaign.
These facilities represent an important opportunity to expand our Community vision by supporting partnerships, programming, and services that benefit the greater Sault area. Planning efforts are ongoing, and we look forward to sharing more details as these spaces evolve to meet community needs.

February 2026
Update on Bond Funding
SAPS adheres to the formal process that allows the District to issue the voter-approved bonds and move forward in accordance with the legal and financial framework required under Michigan law. This process will continue all the way through the bond sale in early April.
To date, all project activity has been funded through the SAPS general fund. Per the vote of the board on February 9, the District aims to deposit bond funds into the construction accounts on or around May 9, 2026. Once bond funds have been secured from the sale, the District will reimburse the general fund and all future expenditures will be paid for from the construction accounts.
Construction Momentum Builds as Winter Planning Positions Us for Spring Action
We're excited to share progress on the bond-funded improvements that our community supported last August. While winter weather has slowed some outdoor work, our teams have been busy with planning, design development, and indoor preparations that will accelerate construction once spring arrives.
Elementary Playground
The elementary playground equipment arrived (and is securely stored) and installation is scheduled for early June 2026. Our students are eagerly anticipating the new play structures, and we're working to ensure safe installation despite winter conditions.
Multipurpose Room & Locker Room Renovations
Design Development Phase Complete
We're thrilled to share the schematic designs from our architects for the multipurpose room and locker room renovations. These drawings show the transformation that will create modern, accessible spaces for our students.
Multipurpose Room & Mezzanine Highlights:
- Flexible space for athletics, assemblies, performances, and community events
- Elevator access to mezzanine level, ensuring all students can access all spaces
- Removal of old bleachers from the mezzanine level
- Remodel the mezzanine weightroom and cheer room
Locker Room Transformation:
- Six locker room spaces for better accessibility and privacy, and for multiple classes, sports, and age groups
- ADA-compliant design throughout
- Modern fixtures and finishes that prioritize dignity and hygiene
Timeline Update:
- Schematic design: ✓ Complete (Fall 2025)
- Design development & construction documents: In progress (Late 2025-Early 2026)
- Bidding & procurement: Spring 2026
- Locker room construction: Summer 2026

Library Transformation into Learning Labs (Phase 3 Focus)
Planning Underway for Flexible Learning Spaces
The reimagining of our two-story library space developed to:
- Fill in the existing stairwell to create additional usable square footage
- Replace old collapsible partitions with permanent wall structures
- Create purpose-built learning labs for STEM, collaborative work, and hands-on learning

Bathroom Renovations (Phase 3 Focus)
Modernizing Facilities with Student Dignity in Mind
Planning is underway for comprehensive bathroom renovations throughout the high school. These updates will replace original 1970s fixtures and design with modern, accessible facilities that meet current standards.

Phase II - Safety & Communication Systems (Phase 2 Focus)
Enhanced safety and communication systems are being planned for installation. The performance contract for overseeing the project was discussed at the Feb 9 board meeting. Energy Systems Group will oversee six domains of the performance tract, including HVAC, generator, drainage, weatherization, lighting improvements, and PA clocks & bells (school communication system).
Next Steps:
- Testing for geothermal energy sources on site: Spring 2026
- Develop and refine plans to replace energy efficient lighting and to weatherize buildings to reduce energy consumption: Spring 2026
Modernized Classroom Upgrades (Phase 4 Focus)
Envisioning the classroom of the future and modifying the physical and technology enabled learning spaces for our students.

Looking Ahead
As we move into spring 2026, our focus will shift from planning to action:
- Finalize construction documents for multipurpose room and locker rooms
- Begin bidding process for summer 2026 construction
- Complete playground installation (weather permitting)
- Break ground on locker room construction (June 2026)
