Degrees and Certifications:
BA English and Communication MSU Teaching certificate in English and Social Studies Spring Arbor University
Hi students and parents! I am Ginny King, your child's 6th grade English Language Arts teacher. I have been involved in education for many years, first as a homeschool teacher, a youth worker at my church, a tutor to international students, then as a substitute teacher and finally as a classroom teacher. I am a Mom of four, all grown now with two out of the nest, so I understand the challenges of raising adolescents. I am one of those strange people who actually likes tweens and teens and I am looking forward to getting to know this year's sixth graders.
I started my college years as a voice major then later switched to English. When my youngest was in high school I went back for my teaching degree and have certification in both English and Social Studies. Today, I still enjoy many creative pursuits such as music, writing, and arts and crafts of many kinds. I began making wire-wrapped jewelry several years ago and it has become a bit of an addiction. I have sold my work at various Michigan craft shows. If the kids notice me wearing jewelry chances are I made it myself.
I grew up in the Detroit suburbs and am a recent migrant to the Upper Penninsula. Even though people think I'm crazy for moving here, my great grandfather originally immigrated to upper Michigan from Finland and until recently my family had a hunting/fishing camp in the Houghton area so I have an attachment to this part of the state. I survived my first winter here and I still love it. The air just smells better up here. I currently reside with my two youngest "kids" and our two miniature dachshunds, Truffle and Kiwi.
I can't wait to meet my students and I hope to meet parents and guardians over the course of the year as well.
I am looking forward to a wonderful and productive year.
Ms. Ginny King
