I'm Al Odbert, I graduated from Sault High in 2004, during my time at Sault High I was enrolled in the Automotive Technology Program along with the Welding Program. After graduation I attended the University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH), were I enrolled in Automotive Technology, High Performance Technology and Alternate Fuels. In 2007 I graduated from UNOH with my associates in applied science. I worked as an automotive technician until the fall of 2022 when I took the automotive teaching position at Sault Area Career Center.

Automotive Technology
Course Description
This course is a two year/four semester course. This year I will cover; Brakes, Steering and Suspension, Manual and Automatic Transmissions.
Classroom Procedures
● Students are to be seated in the classroom when the bell rings.
● Students will remain in the classroom until the bell dismisses them. No lining up at the door.
● Students are NOT permitted to touch any projects that are under repair before instruction.
Cell Phone Policy
Sault High and Career Center is a No cell phone school, cell phones are to be in the student’s locker from 8-3. If a student is caught with a cell phone during that time it will be taken to the office. See student handbook for discipline procedures.
Materials Needed
● Shop clothes
● Appropriate shoes/No open toed shoes. Boots are preferred but not required.
● Pen or pencil
● Paper
● Proper Safety Glasses
Employability Grade
Employability will be graded on work ethic, shop safety and willingness to learn. If the student refuses to participate in lab, shop work or has a safety violation, they will receive a 0 for that day and it will NOT be possible to make up the lost points. Safety is number one! You will immediately fail a lab assignment if you violate any safety procedure and will receive a zero for the day. Proper tool use falls under the safety procedures as well.
Attendance
Attendance is very important. If a student is absent on a shop(lab) day, they must arrange a time with me to make up the assignment. All assignments are due on the assigned due date. If a student needs more time on an assignment, communication with me before turning in an assignment late is important. All late work will be given credit based on effort and timeliness. If turning in work late becomes a consistent issue, we will need to schedule a meeting to understand the causes and effects of the student's late work. If there is any missing work, it will be a 0 in the gradebook. It is the students responsability to ask for missing work. No late work will be accepted on the last week of each quarter.
Grading
There are three factors that affect your grade.
● Task Sheets/Test 40%
● Employability 40%
● Final exam 20%
Work ethics and safety are the two factors that make up the employability grade.

Classroom Behavior/Safety
● Safety Violation: This is the fastest way to be removed from the class. I have zero tolerance for safety violations.
● Safety Glasses: Will be worn in the shop at all times, safety glasses will also be worn in the classroom while projects and specific demonstrations are taking place. One pair of safety glasses will be provided at the beginning of the year. The student is responsible for those glasses, if the student needs a second pair, they will need to purchase them. Unless certified normal eyeglasses do NOT qualify as safety glasses.
● Tool use: The student is responsible for the tools they are assigned and using. If any tool is damaged or lost due to improper use or neglect, the student is responsible for the replacement of the tool. A bill will be sent home and will need to be paid before the student is permitted to use any shop tools or equipment.
● Computer Use: Computer use in the tech lab is limited to ALLDATA or repair information and assigned classwork only.
Student Vehicles
Students are permitted to bring their vehicle into the auto shop on shop days. The following requirements must be met:
· Student must have a valid driver license (Not a segment 2 permit)
· The student must have NO missing work.
· The student must have driving privileges at Sault High.
· The student must have NO safety violations in the last two weeks.
· The student must talk to me BEFORE they want to bring their vehicle in. If I’m asked to bring a vehicle in without prior discussion, there will be no guarantee that the vehicle will be brought it.
· The work being performed must pertain to the class or be something that the student has covered in previous years.
· This is a High School Automotive Technology Program; it is not a repair facility. I understand it’s easy to think we can fix anything and everything, however the class still has subject matter to cover and lessons to get through. Lastly, I’m paid to teach and instruct not to repair, so if the project is to much for the students it will not be brought into the shop.
Student Competitions
The Automotive program is planning on competing in a couple competitions this school year. The students that will be attending competitions must do the following:
· Have no missing work, and a C or higher in ALL of their classes.
· Have less than 10 unexcused absences each semester.
· No major safety violations
A practical and written test will be given to determine which students will be participating.
