WELCOME to SAMS!!! I am so excited to begin the school year with you. I can’t wait to share my passion for reading, writing, and learning with you all this year.

    Course Description:

Students will be focused on improving their literacy skills and writing skills through a curriculum aligned to the sixth grade Common Core Standards. We will be using the 2018 edition of the SpringBoard textbook and materials.

    Reading:

This year we will be looking at several different types of text. The types of text we will be using are; short stories, non-fiction, drama, poetry, and narratives.  This year, sixth grade will be reading three novels.

    • The Cay by Theodore Taylor

    • Walk Two Moons by  Sharon Creech

    • A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park

      • Additionally, students will be responsible for reading a handful of novels independently throughout the school year.

    Writing:

We will be writing several different forms of text; Narrative, Informational, and Argumentative essays as well as text-based responses to literature and poetry in the textbook.

    Building Expectations:

All SAMS behavior expectations will be followed in room 802. The Sault Area Middle School also uses the 4Bs  Be Safe, Be Ready to Learn, Be Responsible and Be Respectful in all areas of the building.  The behavior expectations can be found in the front of the school planner.

    Classroom Expectations:

Within the first week of school, we will work together to create a classroom environment norm contract. Students as well as myself will sign the contract. In addition to the classroom contract, students must follow these five basic rules.

    1. Be on time and come to class prepared.

    2. Work hard and do your best

    3. CELLPHONES ARE NOT ALLOWED IN CLASS

      1. If I see it, I will take it and it will be locked in my office until the end of the hour.

    4. No candy or gum in class

    5. Students may bring a clear water bottle, with a screw on lid.

    If expectations are not followed:

    1st Offense – Verbal Warning

2nd Offense – Teacher/Student Conference after class or during lunch.

    3rd Offense – Contact Home

4th Offense – Referral to the Office

    Materials Needed for Class:

Students will be given a notebook, composition notebook, and a classroom textbook. Unless otherwise stated (student homework) these materials need to be kept in the classroom. Each block has a designated cupboard in my classroom.

    Other Materials Needed Are:

    Writing Utensil

    Planner

    Independent Reading Book

    Homework

If a student fails to complete their work for the day, it will be considered homework.

Every night, students need to spend 20 minutes reading their independent novels, which will be recorded in a reading journal. There will be a book project at the end of the year. There will be very little downtime in class for students to read independently.

    Late Work

If a student has late work, here are the steps to take.

    • If the assignment is a Google Classroom assignment, students must email me (sdumas-sas@eupschools.org) when they turn it in. This way, it allows me to get their grades updated as fast as possible.

      • Ex) Hi, Ms. Dumas. I just finished Unit 1, Lesson 1 on Google Classroom.

    • Students will have one week to complete any missing assignments, if it’s received after one week, they will receive half credit.

If there is any missing work, it will be a 0 in the grade book until it’s turned in. This is for a student to realize an assignment is missing. It is up to the student to turn in any missing work before the quarter ends.

    Absences

If you are absent, here’s what you do when you return.

    • Get in Touch with a Classmate to see what you missed.

    • Check the weekly filing folder in my classroom.

    • If the folder is empty, check Google Classroom.

    • If what you missed is still not clear, or you have questions, email me or come see me the day that you return.

Students are given one day for each day they are absent to complete the allotted work. If you were gone for two days, you have two days to complete the assignments that you missed. It is up to the student to seek, obtain, and return all missing work.

    Monitoring Process

Students will be able to check their grades and put them into their planner on MiStar every Tuesday in class. Both parents and students have access to MiStar.

    Grading Scale

    94-100 A 74-76 C

    90-93 A- 70-73 C-

    84-86 B 64-66 D

    80-83 B- 60-63 D-

Redos and Retakes are ALWAYS an option, as long as it falls within the same quarter. You will not be able to make up an assignment from quarter one in quarter two. All retakes and redos need to be turned in before the last week of the quarter. We will work together to come up with a redo plan. But, the redo/retake may be a different format than what the original test was.

I am here to make sure we have a successful year here at SAMS. I am excited to get to know you all and we’re going to have an amazing year together. You can reach me at my email sdumas-sas@eupschools.org or by phone at (906) 635 6604 ext. 5731.
