Overview of Study: (From Course Catalog)

0320301- Applied Science

Prerequisite: Student must have an IEP (Individualized Education Plan)

Applied Science integrates physical science, biology, chemistry, and earth science into a unified study in the context of work, home, society, and the environment, emphasizing laboratory activities. Topics include natural resources, water, air and other gases, nutrition, disease and wellness, plant growth and reproduction, life processes, microorganisms, synthetic materials, and the community of life. The course will provide students with activities in analytical thinking and with the skills and strategies associated with standardized test-taking. It is expected that students will be able to read and write independently. Instructor and counseling staff will review each individual student and determine if this placement is correct.

-Applied Science is a class that focuses on students who may need an alternative setting to a regular science class. The class will encompass portions of all science classes offered at Sault Area High School (See Course description above). As most students are in the class for multiple years, the focus each year will change. This academic year the focus will be on Life Science (Biology)

Grades:

-Students will be graded on daily assignments. Because all students in the class have specific accommodations, their work will be graded by both correct content (50% of grade) and effort (50% of grade). Because this is an applied class under the special education umbrella, each student’s specific accommodation, per their IEP, is met on a daily basis. This class does not follow a state-mandated curriculum, which allows for greater flexibility in meeting specific accommodations daily for multiple students. Assignments and class projects can be tailored to each.

Universal accommodations:

-Provide extra time to answer questions and formulate responses

-Alternative test area On all classroom and state assessments,

-Read test to student On all classroom and state assessments,

-Allow students to retake tests and give credit for improvements, scores below a 70% on a test, retakes are allowed for up to 70% grade on that test.

-Allow recorded/dictated/typed answers to assignments On assignments/tests when the answers are greater than 1 sentence in length.

-Use of calculator

Classroom Policies:

Many of the cool fun things that you see in the classroom are my personal property (Fish, Hamster, lab equipment, taxidermy mounts).  These are the things that make science fun and doing activities possible.  So respect my stuff, and I will let you use it and we can do fun things. If you don’t respect my stuff then my stuff goes away.

Successful completion of this course requires your daily work and attention to the lesson.

Be in your seat before the bell rings and have a book, laptop, and paper and pencil ready.

Numerous absences will have a negative effect on your grade (due to missing classroom discussions, labs, etc.).  Exceeding 10 absences in a semester could result in loss of credit and having to re-take the class.

Students will remain in their assigned seat until released by instructor.  Once a student is done with the required work, they should bring other material to study.

Tardy policy:    Excessive tardies will result in a reduced grade and a referral to the office.  If you are more than 10 minutes late to class, it will result in an absence for the period.

* excessive tardies will result in a referral to the principal and assignment of Saturday school hours.

No eating or drinking during class.

No hats or inappropriate clothing worn in class.

No Use of cell phones without teacher permission.

Student Chromebooks are only used during class with permission

Participation in classroom instruction is encouraged.  Please share knowledge, experiences, questions, etc.

Individual help is always available.  If you would like to meet after school, let me know so we can arrange a meeting ahead of time.

Classroom courtesy is required (raising hand for questioning / participation, doing your own work, staying seated during class time, working individually and quietly, being on time, etc.)

●      Contact with parents, referrals, suspensions for infractions.

●      Cheating – 1st time → failure of assignment/test, 2nd time → referral to building principal.
